Northeastern Oregon Bicycle Tourism Studio

In fall 2015, the Northeastern Oregon Bicycle Tourism Studio took place; it was a community planning program designed to make northeastern Oregon a premier bicycling destination and to help local businesses benefit from visiting bicyclists. Bicycle travelers in Oregon contribute $400 million annually to the state’s economy – approximately $1.1 million per day. Bicycle tourists in Oregon also tend to spend $124 more per trip – 20% higher than the average visitor.

Anyone in Union, Baker and Wallowa County that is interested in capitalizing on the growing travel trend and looking to increase this market in northeastern Oregon, was invited to participate! We encouraged all lodging establishments, restaurants, cafés, brew pubs, bike shops, tour operators, retail shops and attractions, as well as public land managers, trail advocates, planners, communication specialists, community leaders and of course cyclists, to partake.

A region-wide workshop took place first in October in La Grande where a regional vision and goals were identified. Follow-up action planning meetings took place in each of the three counties in November where the local communities prioritized short-term projects to begin collaboration and execution on.
