Klamath Basin
Rural Tourism Studio
The Klamath Basin Rural Tourism Studio focused on the Klamath Basin region, including the communities of Klamath Falls, Bonanza, Chiloquin, Malin, Merrill, Dorris, Tulelake and others.
The Klamath Basin Rural Tourism Studio was created in response to the destination’s desire to develop existing tourism assets and to create a shared vision for tourism in the region. The communities had existing strengths in agritourism, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation and adventure tourism, and the studio helped attendees develop a common vision for the future and operationalize their next steps.
Klamath Basin Rural Tourism Studio highlights:
- 66 local tourism stakeholders and residents participated in eight workshops and networking sessions held around the region between October and December 2017. Key topics included Community Visioning, Cultural Heritage and Agritourism, Cultural Heritage, Adventure Travel and Outdoor Recreation, Rural Tourism Marketing and Action Planning. Workshop notes, presentations, outreach materials and other resources are available on the Klamath Basin Rural Tourism Studio Resources page.
- Participants drafted a 15-Year Community Tourism Vision for the Klamath Basin.
Studio Outcomes & Success Stories:
- The Klamath Basin Cultural Heritage Action Team published a rack card to promote the three audio tours it produced earlier this year. The action team also developed a printed guide for The Modoc War: A Homeland Lost audio tour to enhance the storytelling of the experience. You can download all three of the existing audio tours online here.
- The Klamath Basin community received $10,000 tourism studio matching grant from Travel Oregon in 2018 to develop audio tours and bicycle maps.
- A mountain and gravel bicycle map and a road bicycle map were published in 2019. More than 30,000 brochures have been distributed to 12 local visitor centers.
- The Klamath Basin community partnered with Travel Oregon to publish a Klamath Basin landing page on traveloregon.com in January 2019 . The landing page also includes the three trip ideas listed below that were created to highlight the visitor experiences discussed during the Klamath Basin Tourism Studio workshops.
