Oregon's Outback Tourism Experience Studio
The Oregon’s Outback Outdoor Recreation Studio focused on helping Lake County develop its potential as an outdoor recreation destination by enhancing and promoting existing recreation assets in the Bullard Canyon.
The Oregon’s Outback Outdoor Recreation Tourism Studio focused on the communities of Lakeview, Adel, Plush, Paisley, Summer Lake, Silver Lake and Fort Rock to develop their potential as an outdoor recreation destination by enhancing existing assets.
Oregon’s Outback Outdoor Recreation Tourism Studio Key Outcomes:
- 47 local tourism stakeholders and residents participated in a two-day workshop April 16-17, 2018 in Lakeview. Workshop topics included identifying market trends, leveraging tourism resources, regional asset identification, qualities of successful outdoor recreation experiences, outdoor recreation market trends and state tourism resources.

- The Oregon’s Outback community received a $5,000 Tourism Studio Matching Grant from Travel Oregon to develop the Oregon Outback Adventure Map in 2018.
- The Lake County Chamber of Commerce received a Travel Oregon Competitive Small Grant award of $8,360 to develop a geological features map in 2018-2019.
- The Oregon’s Outback community partnered with Travel Oregon to publish the Great Adventures In Oregon’s Outback trip idea on traveloregon.com in January 2019 to highlight the local assets and opportunities discussed during the workshops.

Studio Outcomes & Success Stories:
- As part of this effort, this action team also developed signs and reassurance markers along the Noni Trail System using Oregon Tourism Studio grant funds and in-kind time to initiate the project.
- As an outcome of the Studio, community leaders identified securing the International Dark-Sky designation as a priority project for the biennium. This is a global recognition program that works to protect night skies for present and future generations. Travel Southern Oregon, the Studio Action Team and Studio Steering Committee leaders are working on actualizing this designation as a tourism development strategy for the greater Southeast Oregon region.
